Photo printers

I've been printing on Canon photo printers for several years now. First a Canon i960 (still in use) that uses six Canon BCI-6 dye-based ink cartridges, black, photo cyan, photo magenta, cyan, magenta, yellow.. According to Outdoor Photographer,

Dye-based printers produce slightly brighter colors than their pigment-based counterparts. The output from many of these printers displays a wider range of colors than digital prints on conventional photographic paper. Subjects that are naturally vibrant, like flower close-ups, really blaze on dye-based inkjet prints.
I'll agree that I was impressed with the color output with this printer - the prints rivaled anything I printed at a commercial photo lab. I don't know about the longevity of the prints, but I'm not too worried - I save ALL of my photos so I can just reprint them if they do fade. Steve's Digicams had a good review of the printer, and it's actually one that I based my purchase on almost 5 years ago.

I've now transitioned primarily to a Canon MP830 for prints. It uses only four dye-based inks, a new cartridge - CLI-8, with cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, but adds one pigment-based ink, black, to improve the blacks. I can't tell much of a difference between the two printers. The photo cyan and photo magenta in the i960 should make a difference, but I don't usually do side-by-side comparisons.

Now I want to move to a larger format printer. I'd like to stick with Canon as I like the prints. There are a few choices to be made though - Pixma Pro 9500? Pro 9000? i9900? I want to be able to print 13 x 19 prints.

Of course I suppose I need to start thinking about how to frame them too...another day!
