It's my birthday today, so I treated myself to a nice Washington red wine. The DeLille D2 2006 Bordeaux style blend is in fact a very nice Washington red. Award winning, double gold medal it was just an intensely flavorful wine, lots of fruit, but also some of the earthy components I love in reds, pencil lead, cedar box, and some chocolate to boot. The red fruit is clearly there. Medium to full body. Deep color, red, Great balance front to back, and a little acidity that's terrific. Low $40 range makes it a good buy for what it is. It's 52.5% Merlot, 38.5% Cabernet Sauvignon,7% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, a nice blend.

Tonight we tried the Capiaux Pinot Noir Sonoma County Chimera Vineyard 2007. It's a bit of a translucent ruby red. with medium legs. The nose is red cherry, cola, some dark fruit too. On first opening there were some elements mor commonly associated with burgundy - earthy. But I like that, so it was great. The taste is definitely great, and in a surprise in Pinot from California, it has bright acidity and has very deep flavor. It's nicely balanced. The cherry and cola come through, similar, but not in a bad way, to a cherry syrup from an old fashion soda fountain. It has a medium mouth weight for a red, though it might be a bit heavier than most Pinot I've liked. At $30 it's a great buy, and as per usual, The Wine House in Manlius is where I found it thanks to Matt's recommendation. According to their website, http://www.capiauxcellars.com/chimera.html, there were 573 cases. Good luck finding it!
PS - sorry for the break in wine writing. I took most of the summer away from wine, and I'm just now starting my tastings again for the fall.
