Alto Moncayo Alto Moncayo 2005 Garnacha

Dark, opaque, purple, spicy, smokey, with a fairly intense dark berry component. The winemaker says "plenty of muscle and potency" which is code for high in alcohol, at16%! It's got a long, long, spicy, dark fruit taste, with pepper, and toasted oak. It's thick, but not overly so. Well done garnacha from Spain, a Jorge Ordonez, Chris Ringland collaboration. The wine is from Campo de Borja, which is in NE Spain, in Zaragoza. I assume it's named for Moncayo mountain, but don't know if the vineyard is on the mountain or not. About $45. Tasted December 2009.
